Prior to participating in this module I had little uderstanding of the concepts of cyperspace, cyberculture or even cyperpunk apart from seeing it as part of ‘fringe culture’ for the weird, non-conformist if not outcast of society.
After having read the Bell article Storying cyberspace 1: material and symbolic stories, chapter 2 of An introduction to cybercultures (2001) my view on this has been clarified to the extent that it forms a mainstream part in internet-based digital culture, a natural continuation of the science fiction genre. The main difference appears to be that cyberpunks now have the possibility to truely immerse themselves in their imaginary fictional world an intermediary step to a world dominated by intelligent machines, computers, nano-particles, genome-rendering technology and artificial life, a true intermediary between the past and the future, as illustrated within some of the clips in the film festival, in particular in ‘Take off 1.1
