Shared Managing Research Data : JISC.
The scientific process is enhanced by managing and sharing research data. Good data management practice allows reliable verification of results and permits new and innovative research built on existing information. This is important if the full value of public investment in research is to be realised. These principles have been recognised by key stakeholders: most Research Councils now have policies in place which encourage or mandate the creation of a data management plan and the deposit of data in a recognised data centre where such exist. Many leading journals require underlying datasets also to be published or made accessible as part of the essential evidence base of a scholarly article. |

I built a Firefox extension that pulls in realtime web content based on the content of the page you are looking at. It takes the title tag of the HTML file and parses keywords from that to be used in the Collecta query. These terms change and update as you travel from page to page so you are always getting a live feed of things you are currently interested in. The extension can be downloaded and installed from: http://www.box.net/shared/unbpecjpju |

The documentary this blog tracks is an innovative attempt to openly create a tv show with shared and crowd sourced elements. Really interesting presentation: its not about skills in a modern web context, its about culture... |

New ways of seeing the world happen when different types of data are combined and turned into compelling digital objects. It is hard not to see these as crucial tools in the democratisation of the internet and a sense of social empowerment (more utopia than dystopia despite some of the inequalities that can be understood in these maps). |

Interesting. Is social memory only a matter of what is digitally recorded or has it always been about picking out what matters from what has happened. The case of the teacher sketched here, to me, sounds like a mismatch between a conservative culture of record vs. an unmonitored offline culture. Protectionism and concerns about legal action can cause unrealistic expectations in digital identities that are not there for offline private lives - which might be as visible (or more visible) to their local community. |

I find it interesting how no matter how much debate exists about the role of the BBC in media circles it remains one of the few authoritative global internet brands which, perhaps unlike Google etc., retains a sense of trust. Thus a decision to relaunch with social media looks to be an authoritative endorsement of a change in digital communications giving them an old school validity that newer more immediately engaged and innovative brands and sites on the web cannot instil. |

Disruptive technologies blend with very traditional organisations when education becomes an open resource. Interestingly though the debate still seems to be open about how much "free" can increase or decrease the perceived value of information resources. Is free more open and democratic or is it less accountable than materials whose distribution is mediated by payment walls and third parties. |

Charlie Brooker writes on, and links to, a giant digital marketing own goal with what has been described widely (amongst the twitterati at least) as the worst ad campaign ever made. The idea is to build a friendly recommendation and social aspect to launching Windows 7 but the mere fact that Microsoft need expert party holders, tutorials, etc. indicates that this is not going to be an intuitive social event but a product that needs peer support to see you through the install process. Wonderfully the "get involved" concept does not extend to any right to reply: the YouTube film linked to has ratings and comments disabled which, as Bill Hicks once said about the existance of the bullet-proofed pope mobile, indicates a real sense of "faith in action". Microsoft are so sure youll want to be involved they wish to hear nothing from you. |

This is a just wonderful art installation looking at digital identities and how they might be curated in a future era of digital personal histories. I found this link through a link from Douglas Couplands twitter stream and I suspect his persona was more representative than my own. Digital identities and disambiguation becomes a crucial issue in a wider less contextual online world although a semantic web version of this installation might do a lot better at defining personas. Perhaps the ambiguous online identity is a more realistic representation though... |

Interesting take on technology adoption, oddly though Charles Arthur doesn't talk about the fact that some of the most useful productivity tools also have an excluding factor for colleagues and later adopters, and the tolerance level of early adopters like the technology journalists mentioned. I find the comment about a work/life balance/hum being tricky in an always-on internet existence interesting: a big part of current debates about how technology fits into life revolves around the threat to leisure time and the blurring or personal and professional. There is also hostility to the idea of an always available connection that jars with the criticisms made whenever internet outages create a sense of isolation. I think these changing and converging relationships between social space and working identity are having a huge impact on digital cultures at present, particularly with the growth of real name social spaces online (e.g. Facebook). |

This is very neat: this post is supposed to be showing the various Twitter t-shirts available for purchase but what is interesting about it is that it reveals the very different appropriations people make of Twitter. Some of the shirts are very similar but some reveal very different understandings of what Twitter is and how it should be used ranging from the jokey sarcastic uses to pedantic and obsessive experiences of the service. |

The Icebreaker wall for the Digital Cultures wall. Some really interesting interpretations here and I like the choice of tool - being able to look around and move posts and add them where you want is very pleasing. . |
