(dis)location From Usher and Edward’s paper I have tried to garner the key pointers offered which will help me to interpret the changes implied for teaching, learning and research. the reader becomes the potential author This marks my return to my blog after an enforced absence; having a medical problem myself, trying to teach effectively, looking after a household, two dogs, five cats and two rabbits plus a wife recovering from a major operation showed me just how much clay my feet were made of. OK, perhaps things are not so dramatic but you have definitely reached the end of my lifestream. As a chronological collection of my digital activities and interests, my lifestream hopefully conveys a sense of my many disembodied online presences. [...] I found this a really challenging week as the readings were dense but very stimulating. Initially when I thought about what a Cyborg might be the types of images I had in mind came from science fiction – like the 1989 Japanese film Tetsuo: The Iron Man (see trailer below though it is a little [...] Lots of activity this week, in a number of directions, a fact that’s indicative of how stimulating this course has been for me so far. I watched a lot of videos by M. Wesch, Haraday and Baudrillard, started looking at some other of N.K. Hayles’ books, used Twitter mainly for relaying links for interesting papers, [...] McWilliam and Palmer’s paper on the importance of the teacher’s material presence in teaching reminded me of something a colleague once told me: “65% of all teaching is performance”. You might disagree with his percentage or dismiss him as a proponent of old-fashioned transmissive teaching methods, but anyone who has ever taught in a classroom [...] Inner workings The readings by Usher and Bayne on uncanny, dislocated pedagogies triggered a reverse engineering process in my mind and allowed me to lift the lid and examine the inner workings of our course. Among the cogs and wheels I can now see: In our use of WordPress, Twitter, Skype, WallWisher, the phpBB forum, Flickr, [...] I prefer the term posthuman to cyborg. I think as the digital world we see today was emerging in the ’90s and early 00’s we misunderstood the effects of the relationship between ‘us’ and technology. Much of this misunderstanding was idealistic and hopeful – Haraway anticipated we would be cleansed of gender and bias for [...] The more I use this lifestream, the more I love it. I have found it invaluable to store resources, and the weekly summary forces me to draw them all back in together again, like unpicking a tangled ball of wool! I have been using Tumblr to store interesting quotes from the reading as I go through [...] Silvana has left a comment in response to my previous blog entry Defining posthumans where she states that: “I think the key is the rejection of individualism which I think is central to a humanist view” This tied in neatly with some additional thoughts that I have been mulling over today, so I thought I would blog [...] |
